The Cotswolds... the most idyllic... picture perfect villages!

Friday 22 September 2017

Had a good nights sleep and brekky at the Premier Inn at Emersons Green.   Great to see my brother for a coffee before we set off too.  Now for a day exploring the Cotswolds... can't believe I have never been before over the years!!

First stop Castle Coombe...

Wow!!!! Totally picturesque and definitely chocolate box picture material.  A few movies have been filmed in this gorgeous location too... Dr Dolittle, War Horse, Poroit are the most prominent ones.

St Andrew's Parish Church is a Grade 1 listed building.

The ceiling was stunning with the bell chord hanging down

Mum and Dad enjoying a relaxing coffee and cider at The Castle Inn, while we wander around more.   They certainly made an excellent Cappuccino here.  Next time we return I would definitely visit and stay the night... the rooms look so inviting.

Postman Pat delivering the mail in his little red car but no sign of his black & white cat!

I was totally in awe of this stunning little Cotswolds village.  Definitely a must if your visiting the UK that's for sure.  Not sure how the locals feel about lots of tourists visiting constantly!!

Next stop Bibury.

This photo is of the picturesque Arlington Row cottages.  Built in 1380 as a monastic wool store. Converted into a row of weavers' cottages in the 17th century. The cloth produced there was sent to Arlington Mill on the other side of Rack Isle. The cloth was then hung on wooden timber frames on Rack Isle after being degreased at Arlington Mill.  Arlington Row is probably one of the most photographed Cotswold scenes.

Picturesque River Coln flowing through Bibury...

St Mary's Church...  first time I have ever noticed barrel top graves too.

Another stunning English country pub... The Swan Hotel.

Stunning spot for a bite to eat, that's for sure... delicious smoked salmon, cream cheese & cucumber sandwiches, with a side of crisps and coleslaw... washed down with a cider and a beer!!!
Again, just wow in terms of scenery here at Bibury.

Next stop Upper Slaughter and Lower Slaughter.

The name of the village of Lower Slaughter stems from the Old English name for a wet land 'slough' or 'slothre' (Old English for muddy place) upon which it lies. This quaint village sits beside the little Eye stream and is known for its unspoilt limestone cottages in the traditional Cotswold style.

The Old Mill...

Next and last stop in the Cotswolds for us is Stow-on-the-Wold.

Here I wanted to find St Edward's church which was built between the 11th and 15th centuries.  The doorway is flanked by two huge Yew trees and my gorgeous hubby in the centre!!

Lucy's is a great country tea house... did awesome hot chocolates too!!

Left, hot chocolate with dollops of fresh cream.... on the right hot chocolate with dollops of fresh cream and marshmallows!!!

What an amazing day mooching around these absolutely gorgeously idyllic villages.

Now for a few days R&R at home and catching up with family and friends.
