A day of relaxation & onto Washington DC

First up Sunday 10 September 2017

I was so looking forward to this day and experiencing the whipped cocoa bath and a relaxing massage.  Thank you so much Maria for treating me to my bath for my birthday!! :-)  The boys went off to play in a golf tournament.

The bath is filled with hot water, milk and cocoa crystals which foams up... its extremely soothing and softening for the skin.   While eating the chocolate Hershey kisses they give you too!! Totally decadent experience!!

The Spa at the Hershey Hotel is so luxurious too and you can so easily get lost inside as its on several levels and there are rooms everywhere!!!

During my experience I did have a bit of a mishap!!.... while trying to take a picture my Iphone 6 casually slipped out of my hand and into the chocolate bath tub!!!! I swore quite loudly... I'm surprised no one came rushing in to see if I was ok & not drowning!!! After fumbling around for which seemed a lifetime to try and find my phone I finally located it!!! Quickly drying it off and thinking my hubby is going to call me a plonker.... which he did!!! Thankfully it survived and I breathed a huge sigh of relief and I live to tell another tale!!!

After our relaxing time at the spa we met the boys for lunch at the golf club as it was family day and they put on an amazing smorgasboard of food!!! We also got to meet Tim and Maria's wonderful friends too.

After lunch we took off down to Washington DC with Tim and Maria.  We thought it best to stay there on Sunday night so we could experience a full day checking out the city.  We stayed at The Fairfax on Embassy Row.  A lovely hotel... comfy bed, fantastic shower and great location.
Passing the Embassy of Australia on the way
And a cool cop on a segway motoring by!!!

Once we checked in we went off to find a place for dinner.  We initially went looking for the Game of Thrones pop up bar, but unfortunately we missed it by one week.  So wandering around and trying to decide where to eat we fell across a great little place around the corner called the Right Proper Brewing Company.   We all enjoyed the baby back ribs... so finger licking good!!

Great day and night had by all.

Monday 11 September 2017

Awoke early and headed out for breakfast at 8.30am to Cafe Dupont just off Dupont Circle.  Great breakfast but unfortunately the service was quite slow! Now readily fuelled for a big day ahead of walking and sightseeing.

Quite a reflecting day today too, being 9/11, 16 years on!! Flags all flying at half mast, & heightened security everywhere!!

First up The White House!!  A casual walk down Connecticut Avenue and we were there on the front lawn.  Along the way coming across this cool building.
 A row of food trucks!!
And beautiful flowers in a park.

Not as close as you would normally get on other days at The White House but it was still a great feeling standing there in front of history!  After watching TV programs and movies over the years with The White House in full view and now actually standing in front of it... Wow!

We were advised by security that Trump had just arrived back to The White House from the Pentagon when we took these White House pics!!  Check out the cars in the driveway.

Another re-enactment pic of the Dave's tour...
unfortunately don't have the last year picture to compare.

Security checking us out!

Next stop the Washington Monument, but on the way enjoying the architecture.

Notice the two different flags in the photo below.  As stated on Wikipedia... The black one is the National League of Families POW/MIA flag, also known as the POW/MIA flag, consists of a silhouette of a prisoner of war (POW) before a guard tower and barbed wire in white on a black field. “POW/MIA” appears above the silhouette and the words “You Are Not Forgotten” appear below in white on the black field.

The POW/MIA flag was created for the National League of Families of American Prisoners and Missing in Southeast Asiaand officially recognized by the United States Congress in conjunction with the Vietnam War POW/MIA issue, "as the symbol of our Nation's concern and commitment to resolving as fully as possible the fates of Americans still prisoner, missing and unaccounted for in Southeast Asia, thus ending the uncertainty for their families and the Nation."

I love the architectural detailing on this building, just stunning!

Boys having fun!
A view of Capital Hill from the Monument.
And in the other direction a view of the Lincoln Memorial.

Views of the World War II Memorial.

Views over the Arlington Memorial Bridge up to Arlington Cemetery and Arlington House.

Views of Capital Hill and Washington Monument from the Lincoln Memorial.  Its wonderful that you can walk all the way around this monument and get a different view from each side.

Boys having fun!

Time for a sit down and a relaxing drink to re-coup our energies while watching these cute birds.

Then on to the Korean War Veterans Memorial...

I then spotted this tree with fungi growing on it, which looks like a tree with the slit in the tree as its trunk!

Time for our first Uber in DC to get us to the Botanical Gardens and Capital Hill.

Yay one of my favourite creatures...

Views back to the Washington Monument.

We then on our walk came across the Newseum which showcases more than 800 front page newspapers from around the world.  We found the Australian one on the row along the footpath.

Tim with his new mate!
Yay we found a sandwich joint for a bite to eat.  The Potbelly Sandwich Shop.  Great sandwiches too.  I had the T.K.Y.  - Hand-sliced turkey breast with melted Swiss cheese topped with fresh lettuce and tomato on multigrain, 1/3 less meat and cheese than an original sandwich. Only 300 cals.  Sooo Good!!  They toast them too.

I loved the sign on the wall.. 'Peace, Love & Potbelly'! Funky little joint it was.

For our second Uber of the day... we wanted the driver to take us on a bit of a tour but the driver we got didn't really understand English and had no idea what we were asking along the way, just kept saying yes!  In the end we got him to drop us off as we had had enough of trying to explain to him!!

So where we were dropped we went to explore the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial.  In the memorial we came across this little cheeky fella! Quite a poser!!

So pleased we got to visit the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial... it was such a tranquil and reflective area, a must to see if your visiting Washington DC!  Now time to get our last Uber for the day back to the Hotel to pick up Tim's car and to head back to Harrisburg.  But before we do we wanted to take a look at the Arlington Cemetery.  On the way we passed this cool bookshop and stunning Florist shop window display!!

Driving over to Arlington.... spot the Davey van!!

First up we went to see the Kennedy Memorials with the eternal flames.

A view of the Lincoln Memorial from the Kennedy Memorial site.

We weren't aware how vast and hilly this cemetery was... 624 acres to be precise!!!   And contains the remains of more than 400,000 people from the United States and 11 other countries, buried there since the 1860s!!  Certainly a place of reflection!!

Afterwards passing the Pentagon on the way back to Harrisburg.

What an awesome day!!! Walked in total 20 odd thousand steps, around 16.3ks!!  On the way home stopping off at the Lucky Corner Vietnamese Restaurant in Frederick... thanks to TripAdvisor!!! The food was spectacular!!!

Tomorrow we head off to JFK, via the Amish Countryside... and then off to England... Till then take care xx
