Lighthouse Adventures

Monday 4 September - Wednesday 6 September...

Monday morning we said our goodbyes to The Boro Hotel and NYC.. here's a few photos of our hotel entrance and breakfast cafe... I really liked the very industrial feel to the place...

By the way we woke to a stunning morning too... couldn't resist snapping a few more pics!!

We booked our taxi driver from our arrival from JFK to take us to Newark Airport... though I think we got a bit ripped off by him!!! Grrr!!!

On the way taking a few shots of the city driving by.

Going over the Queensboro Bridge we could see from our hotel...

The Metlife Centre... used to be the Pan-Am Centre

Traffic Cop doing what he does best
Next destination Bangor in Northern Maine.

"It's not the 'third box car midnight train' but the destination is the same."

Our flight was on schedule and only an hour in the air as we had a good tail wind.  After travelling for 22hrs this was great to hear!!

A few aeriel shots on the way... they are not totally clear as we were quite far away and the aeroplane windows were pretty small and scratchy! But you will get the gist I'm sure.

view coming into land at Bangor
Arrived into Bangor on a very smooth flight... picked up our rental car and took off to find our first lighthouse... Bass Harbour Headlight.  Unfortunately we didn't see Steven King loitering around at all!!

Two incredibly stylish buildings travelling past.  Most of the roadsides & houses in the townships have an American Flag outside to, so patriotic, which is lovely.

The cliffside Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse in Acadia National Park is located in the village of Bass Harbor within Tremont, Maine.  It marks the entrance to Bass Harbor on the southwestern side of Mount Desert Island. The lighthouse was built of brick in 1858 on a stone foundation, stands 56 feet above mean high water.

Stunning walk down to the left hand side of the lighthouse...

views from the right side with the old bells...

So so happy to have been able to visit this stunning part of the world... its well worth a visit so so beautiful.  You could easily spend a month up around Bar Harbour and Arcadia National Park.  Will definitely have to return for a longer visit now we have gotten a taste of it.
One down a few more to go!!!... The next one is further down the coast near Rockland called Marshall Point Lighthouse.  This one was in the movie Forrest Gump, where Forrest finished his cross country running down the lighthouse runway.

On the way stopping off for a bite to eat at a lovely harbour side restaurant at East Harbour.  We wanted to share a dish so asked for the Lobster Taco... wow so glad we got to share it as it was huge!!! Also when ordering food here and not knowing what your going to be receiving is another quest!!  Anyhow is was a nice pit stop with a stunning view.

More lighthouses on the side of the road as we travelled South.

Loved the church sphere's too.

and spectacular bridges.

Not sure what this place was... but looked interesting.

Another lighthouse along the side of the road.

Prior to arriving at this lighthouse we checked in to our hotel in Rockland as it was getting quite late and didn't want to miss check-in time!  We stayed at The Rockland Harbour Hotel... great location but unfortunately a little noisy at 4.00am... with the street sweeper going by!!! Bit annoyed with this as I didn't notice any comments about noise on Trip Advisor!!  The hotel was lovely though, very comfy, clean and spacious. We even got a queen size bed each!!!   I also received a wonderful goodies bag on arrival for my birthday!!! Bag of sweets and chocolates :-) Such a lovely gesture.  Breakfast was good too, enough to sneak a doggy bag for snacks later on!!

Arriving at the Marshall Point Lighthouse we had the added bonus of a sunset too... this made for great light on the lighthouse and backdrop as the sun went down.  So so happy!!!  Run Forrest run....

Now to find somewhere for supper.

The hotel manager suggested a few places for dinner... but he suggested the locals favourite seafood joint... Claws, so we gave Claws a go.  We certainly were not disappointed. The lobster was finger licking good!

Never seen so many sauces at a restaurant before either!!

fresh lobster, fresh crab cakes, slaw and corn cob.... so delicious!

They are not wrong!!
Another early morning start and a day of driving down the coast.  Awoke to a stunning sunrise over the ferry terminal.

Rockland Harbour Hotel
Next stop Owls Head Light State Park... which was just up the road and easy to find.  Just a short climb up 39 steps to reach the lighthouse.  Stunning views too.

Davey says... if that's a Moose... I'd hate to see a rat!!! :-)

Back in the car and off to Permaquid Point Lighthouse

When we arrived here there was a fee to access this lighthouse, $3.00 each as the surrounding area is owned by the local community but the lighthouse itself is still owned by the Coastguard.  More than happy to pay this so we could look around.  We could actually go up into this lighthouse too which was very special.

I loved the design of the spiral staircase...

On the way down the coast noticing the trees starting to turn colour...

On the road again.... next destination Portland Head Lighthouse

We could also glimpse the Ram Island Ledge Light Station out in the distance... this was a bonus to see too!!

Portland was situated on a stunning coastline of Fort Williams Park.. very rugged too.

More stunning chapels and homes on the way....

Now on to Cape Elizabeth Lighthouse. This lighthouse is privately owned and unfortunately is not accessible to the public, however you can see from the end of the driveway.  What a feeling saying you live in your very own lighthouse!

Then you can see another lighthouse in the same street, but I'm not sure what this one is about or whether its just a feature of the house!

I loved the wood stacking at a home down this street too!!

The homes in this area are stunning too!

Now on to Nubble Lighthouse which is our last one were going to see on the East Coast of Maine.  Also we can not access this one as its positioned on an Island, but its very visible from the coastline.

The homes in this area are just incredible too!!  I think some of them may be converted to condos!

This huge building on the point below I think is Cliff House, Maine... a huge resort complex.

The around the corner we stumbled across this vast beach...
Long Sands Beach, York, County Maine
We have both been in awe of what we have visualised so far down the East Coast!!! If your thinking of visiting you should allow yourself at least two to three weeks from Bar Harbour to Portland.  We only touched the surface in three days!!!!

Noticing on the way the cool school buses.... I didn't realise that when an American school bus stops the stop sign pops out at the side of the bus and all traffic behind and coming the other way must stop for the safety of the children.  I think this is so cool and should be done all over the World!!

A total of 12 lighthouses on this leg of our journey :-)

Now to head inland for our nights accommodation at Squam Lake Inn ... ready for a day of exploring covered bridges tomorrow.
