Leaving Newport - Rhode Island and onto Harrisburg...Gettysburg
Friday 8 September 2017
On leaving Newport, Rhode Island we had to visit the Castle Hill Lighthouse out on the point to add to our collection! It was a little difficult to find but eventually we found it, and thanks to the valet guy at the Castle Hill Inn he let us park in their car park briefly. Then its a short walk through the bush to get to the lighthouse. Spectacular views too when you get there. We were also very fortunate to have a yacht sail past too, which makes a lovely pic!
We could see the Claiborne Pell Newport Bridge too... as stated on Wikipedia the main span of the Newport Bridge is 488 metres (1,601 ft), ranking it number 87 among the longest suspension bridges in the world, and making it the longest suspension bridge in New England. The overall length of the bridge is 3,428 meters (11,247 ft).
The house perched on this tiny island is called the "Clingstone". It was built in 1905, The island is part of a group called "The Dumplings" in Narragansett Bay, near Jamestown, Rhode Island.
A very quick climpse of Hog Island Shoal Light on the way over the bridge. This unique spark plug lighthouse (a lighthouse that has a three-story living area, with the lantern on top completely placed on a concrete or metal caisson) was built in 1901. It is located just off the southeast shore of Hog Island at the beginning of the Mount Hope Bay. The lighthouse was automated in 1964, and today is privately owned and not open to the public, as stated by Brittany Lauro on the Discover Newport from Stem to Stern.
Along the way down to Harrisburg we crossed The Pearl Harbour Memorial Bridge... more commonly known as the Q Bridge by locals.
Not sure what this lighthouse was...
Tappan Zee Bridge is a cantilever bridge in the state of New York over the Hudson River.
We did a bit of a detour to Tallman Mountain State Park for a picnic overlooking the Hudson River. great spot to stop it was too!
Looking right down to Yonkers...
Cheers! Delicious cocktails :-)
The all essential mac n cheese with crab meet... totally delicious. Figs stuffed with blue cheese and Scallops. This set us up for the day!
Views of the Hershey Hotel...
Stunning gardens too...
Then we were introduced to Troegs Tasting Room... great selection of beers and a fantastic spot for lunch too.
The boys had to do an re-enactment too for the Dave's tour.... Dave, who is a mate of ours too on the right visited Tim & Maria last year and Tim suggested that my Dave copied the same photo!!! It was quite a laugh getting it done!! See if you can spot Tim!!
Then on to Gettysburg for a looksie. We did a self guided tour, well Tim was our tour guide. On the way I spotted the street lights through Hershey... pretty cool I'd say! And, most of the streets were chocolate names!
Got the shock of my life when I looked out the window of our car and was face to face with this dog at the traffic lights!!
Pretty garden...
North Carolina Memorial...
Little Round Top... Quick action by Brig. Gen. Gouverneur K. Warren Meade's chief engineer, alerted Union officers to the Confederate threat and brought Federal reinforcements to defend this position.
The Castle at Little Round Top... this memorial is for the 44th New York & two companies from the 12th New York Infantry Regiments... this tower was purposely designed to reflect the numeric designations of the units it represented. Its 44 feet high and the interior is 12 feet square... as stated on the Gettysburg Tour Centre.
Sorry, just had to take this pic!!!
The National Cemetary's Witness Tree... this tree has a bullet or several in it, but at the time we didn't look for them.
Another re-enactment of the two Dave's on the Dave Tour... left - this year... right - last year! See if you can spot Maria!! :-)
Codori Farm as stated by 2017 Steve A. Hawks is just south of Gettysburg on the east side of Emmitsburg Road. (Tour map: Emmitsburg Rd. – Codori Farm) It was the scene of heavy fighting on July 2nd and was at the center of Pickett’s Charge on July 3rd. General Pickett remained near the farm buildings during the attack. The current farmhouse was there at the time of the battle, although a two story brick addition was added to its rear in 1877. The current barn is a replacement for the original that was torn down in 1882.

I think this might be the McLean (McClean) barn but not 100%
Crowning the podium atop of the dome of the memorial is a bronze Nike figure, the Goddess of Victory and Peace.
Another great day. Tomorrow off to the Hershey Day Spa for me, golf for Dave and then down to Washington DC for a look around. Till then.

A view of Devil's Den... as stated on wikipedia... is a boulder-strewn hill on the south end of Houck's Ridge at Gettysburg Battlefield, once used by artillery and infantry (e.g., sharpshooters) on the second day of the 1863 Battle of Gettysburg during the American Civil War. A tourist attraction since the memorial association era, several boulders are worn from foot traffic and the site includes numerous cannon, memorials, and walkways, including a bridge spanning two boulders.
From Devil's Den a view up to the Castle at Little Round Top.
Sorry, just had to take this pic!!!
