Day at the US Open

Welcome back :-)

We arrived by taxi from JFK to our hotel for the next couple of nights... The Boro Hotel New York.  I was extremely happy with our selection.  Great views, albeit very misty and wet outside.  Shower powerful.  Comfy bed and pillows.  A great start to the holidays :-)

We completely crashed last night as you could imagine after travelling 22 hours!!!  Awoke feeling quite refreshed but still had a stuffy head cold!!!

Unfortunately the weather was pretty miserable too, though the forecast says its to clear in the afternoon.  Thankfully it did :-)

A view of the Queensboro Bridge and the city in the mist!

view of the chimney's of the Ravenswood Generating Station

Once up and about we popped down for brekky in the hotel... they did the best avocado on brioche ever!!! The coffee wasn't too bad either!  Great way to start the day.

Now all fuelled up it was off to find the train station and hopefully enjoy a few games of tennis. The train station was an easy 20 minute walk right at the end of our street, up and over a foot bridge.  Ticket purchased by a not so friendly ticket attendant were all ready to go.

Unfortunately when we arrived at the Met Willets Point station the heavens unleashed!!! We waited for about 5 minutes for it to ease off a little and decided to just go for it... thankfully we had our waterproofs with us but no umbrella.  Must remember to purchase one!!  We didn't get too soaked, thankfully!!

Once inside the grounds we wandered around all the outlets and found the Lavazza stand for a very welcoming hot coffee and a sit down, praying for the rain to stop.  Whoever was up there must have listened to us as it did ease off and then eventually stopped for the rest of the afternoon... thank you.

While waiting we sussed out the scheduled games, as it was the middle of the tournament there were only doubles playing on the outer courts.  All the main singles games were being played in the Arthur Ash Stadium and we were unable to purchase tickets for this arena... we did try to upgrade our grounds passes but were advised that the only available upgrade was $700 each!!! We kindly declined!!

While it was still drizzling we went and checked out the Unisphere.  Pretty impressive World structure.

Anyhow we weren't disappointed in the matches we watched... here's a few action shots...

Thomspon / Lindstedt won 7-6, 6-1.

Jamie Murray & Bruno Soares won 7-6, 6-3.  Marcus Daniell was a Kiwi... his mum and dad sat right behind us cheering him on.  Nice to have a chat to fellow Kiwis too! Shame he didn't win.

Kiki Bertens & Johanna Larsson won 6-2, 6-3.

We found Wally!!

Martina Hingis & Jamie Murray won 6-0, 4-6, 11-9 tie break.

Such a great afternoon in the end.  Here's a shot of everyone in the park outside watching the screens.

On the way home we came across a local New York Policeman with his dog JC... I was trying to take a pic of them walking along the platform and the cop called out to me... thinking he was going to tell me off for taking their photo he yelled out...'did I get his good side' Phew!!! So we ended up having a pic together :-)

Tomorrow we are off on our lighthouse adventure.... till tomorrow xx
